The Marías @ The Cherry Blossom Festival Atlanta

by Erin Davis

The Marías stun live, wrapping the audience in the cool rivers of their sound and tantalizing allure of soft-core indie pop. The Marías sport a vintage west Hollywood vibe with a distinctly transportive and retro-futuristic quality. Their hazy sound and chilling vocals emphasize a seductive dream-pop feel with Latinx influences, María slipping in and out of lilting Spanish throughout the set. The crowd swayed under the hypnotic spell the soulful tones of ‘Ruthless’ cast; ‘Clueless’ consumed us in it’s velvety dream, and ‘Over the Moon’ drew us all in with its tinge of psychedelic soul. We were swept away in their crisp symphony of sound, the flushing tones of Marías’s crooning soprano climbing to sweet, tingling crescendos.

Crowds of young and old filled the outdoor venue space, crowding the grass and fueling the energy of the set. Kids with red, green, blue hair jumped around, bobbing their heads to lyrical thrumming of ‘I Don’t Know’, waving spindly arms in the air thick with electricity. Intimate and invigorating, the show climaxed with the Marías’s harmonious serenade, as if she was lovingly wishing us all goodbye. At least, for now.
