Modern Nomad & Not Charles - One Night

By Sam Mackey

Modern Nomad’s Thomas McLean and Not Charles’ Charles Thompson bridge together to create the single “One Night”. With cover reflecting the overall feel of the song, the sounds twist and twirl through muted tones. Maryland native McLean describes the song stating “It kind of has a Steve Lacy/ Alternative R&Bish vibe,” displaying the fusion of passionate beats. Beginning with simplistic strums soon joined by an echoing vocal introduction, “One Night” combines sonic elements of nonchalant bedroom recordings and developed production. “Ask myself if everything is fine/ I’ll say it’s true” they sing, progressively working to detach themselves from their uncertainties. Ending with a whistle-like pattern overshadowing a masked conversation.

A perfect song to add to your summer playlists, whether that soundtracks a night dancing with friends, driving through the city, or even just personal introspection from your bedroom; “One Night” is about as versatile as it is funky. If the cover image doesn’t already draw you in, I hope this review will, because trust me - you won’t be turning the volume down anytime soon.

As another impressive single of McLean’s and an unsuspecting debut release for Thompson, the future looks bright for not only the musicians, but us listeners as well. I’m eager to see what other impressive sounds are in store for future releases.
