Lily Waters: Breath in The Wind Music Video Debut

by: Hector Castro

Once again we are charmed by gracious talent within Southern California as Lily Waters returns with their sophomore music video, “Breath in the Wind.” Directed by Marinthia Gutierrez, with cinematography by Andre De Limur, we are invited to a beautiful picture, noting the small aspects of life we’ve come to take for granted, as well as those we’ve found with fortune.

Lily Waters gifts us a music video on location, highlighting Gabbi Green’s childhood home of East Los Angeles. With shots depicting the beautiful “Virgin’s Seed” mural by Paul Botello, a local paletero, ice-cream truck, a playful park, and other amazing chicanx murals, we are welcomed to the sights and vibrances of the Latinx community in East L.A. We also get to follow the band around, exploring the playfulness of Gabbi’s childhood community with the addition of her elementary school best friend. Little nods to Gabbi’s real life experiences are scattered all throughout the video, adding a whole new layer of vulnerability to an already moving song.

“The video for ‘Breath In The Wind’ marks the 12-year anniversary of my father's passing, and is more or less a tribute to him. I'm 21 right now, so this officially marks more than half of my life without him. The song title stems from the feelings that I am thankful to have spent any time, or rather- "a breath in the wind"- with him at all. The song itself is about that bittersweet feeling of appreciating this time, but also acknowledging you would have liked more; It's not just about losing loved ones to death, but about anybody who comes and goes in your life for any reason, whether that's family that has grown distant, friendships that have fallen out or simply people you pass by on the street and will never really get to know.”

“Breath in the Wind” reminds us of who we witness in our lives. Who we’ve lived by, side by side. With shots seemingly directed to us, Lily Waters appreciates the wonders people have shared with us. We are reminded of the impact those wonders could make. “Breath in the Wind” is a song that reflects with the fortune we’ve all been met beside a significance that has also become a large factor in our lives.

Though the world is bittersweet, we may be lucky, like others, to find a true wonder amidst a sea of people. Nonetheless, it is important to keep those memories close, because you may remain as a breath in the wind in the end.

“It’s crazy to think that everyone that I have met could mean the world to me, if only I’d get the chance to know them.”
